gluttony... part six of the seven deadly sins....

to talk about gluttony i dont have to think or go very far... i m sure everyone knows how much we gujjus love to eat... and if the food is a dessert or a sweet then don't even think we'd share it with anyone...

this happened when a relative threw a party at some restaurant... my whole family was invited... now before i go into the details of the party let me give you a run down on my lovely family...

i m the only daughter in my family... got a bro... n four other cousins (all guys)... all tall..really tall... ( i m 5'4 n i look like a dwarf in front of them).... n ofcoz well built... n handsome.... they r a gang and try to bully everyone around... including me... my bhabhis r the ones who r always harassed by them... n the leader of the gang is my uncle... damn hes the one whos spoilt all of them...

so getting back to the party, my uncle had just suffered a bout of jaundice (or was it malaria?) some days back... but since he was well we asked him to come along... and then it was time to eat!!!....

the menu was great but the best were the rasgollas that were kept in a bowl right at the end of the table... so the whole gang instead of starting from the start of the table landed right at the back... they picked up the bowl n sat on a nearby table.... someone suggested a rasgolla eating competition and everyone agreed...

so all my 5 brothers were given their plates n we were going to time them... (since my uncle wasn't well we didnt allow him to participate)... 3 minutes was the time given n there were 25 rasgollas in each of their plates...

"n your time starts now"....1,2,3.... start!...... n then the chaos that followed could just be imagined!!!... one after another all the rasgollas started disappearing... clothes were wet with the sweet water from the rasgollas... faces got yucky... more and more people started crowding to see what the fuss was all about.... kids started yelling... elders started screaming... 10,9,8,7,6,5,4,3,2,1...STOP!!!!.....

OVER.....

time for final count.....

my bro n one of my cousins had given up at 12 rasgollas.... the others were in the count of around 15-18.... n mitesh my fave cousin... well he had 24!!!!!!.... 24 rasgollas in 3 mins... lol i cant even eat 2 at a time....

n what do u think my uncle says when he came to know the count???....

"if i were in your place i could atleast eat 30 and then go and eat my dinner!"....ufff too much....

ok guys this wish is for my best friend who is going away... (he claims hes going away to make billions)... hes fleeced billions from me n a mercedes too... ufff the day i get rich i have to pay him all this... so guys wish him good luck... (n me too so that i can get rich soon)... if u have read some of my early posts u'll know that hes the same guy i call my 'muse'...(i've never met him but hes changed my outlook about life)... n he calls me his angel...(i still dont know y)... so this is just for him :)

muse dear... i wish you all the luck in this world... may u be happy wherever you go... n u better be here 21 years from now... 25th jan 2036... taj lands end coffee shop... 4 pm... will wait for u then...till then bye... do keep in touch...

sloth...part five of the seven deadly sins....

this is one topic which i really didnt want to write about... i mean how many of you guys really really know anyone who is lazy???... atleast i dont... not in this fast paced world where the standard response is 'who has the time???'... those who are poor are trying to make ends meet... those who are rich are trying to get richer... no time for friends and no time for family... so i thought i would deviate a little off course...

take a family for example... parents are working all day... children goto school or college... attend n number of classes and tutions... no time to play coz they have to attend an extracurricular class every evening... husband has no time for wife... and vice versa... they are so tired by the end of the day that i doubt they even have time to catch up on each other... no time for vacations... no time for their parents... ask them to take a vacation and probably it will be a business cum pleasure trip...now wheres the time for 'laziness'???

lives are so stressed today that people have to take help to destress themselves... have to take psychiatric help... divorce rates going up every day.... think of the way we communicate with our friends... sms, webcam, telephone and at the most half an hour at a cafe or a pub.... is that enough???...

therefore according to me the antithesis of sloth is one of the seven deadly sins of today...

the key to get over this is to take it easy... chill... i quote one of my favourite poems by william henry blake... its called

"leisure"

what is this life if, full of care,
we have no time to stand and stare.

no time to stand beneath the boughs
and stare as long as sheep or cows.

no time to see, when woods we pass,
where squirrels hide their nuts in grass.

avarice... part four of the seven deadly sins....

when i read about this in the papers i wondered 'what sort of a greed is this?' 'who are such insane people who can go to such limits?'

killing... unwanted killing... a greed to kill animals... animals who cant even fight back... is there any need for this?...

mansoor ali khan pataudi... lovingly called tiger was recently caught with seven others in Haryana with carcass of a black buck n hares... his son saif ali khan was also arrested a few years back for poaching... salman khan too was caught red handed for the same...

what is it with these super rich and famous people???.... why is there an inane need in them to kill?

i sometimes wonder what if they didnt have the guns on them?... what if they went hunting unarmed??... do they have the guts to do that??? ..... or is it just that they want to stroke their stupid super egos?... a need to show the world that they are all powerful?...

in her autobiography, princess, vijayraje scindia writes about how hunting was an 'exercise in vanity' for the royals. "it was vanity of the times that the man who shot the biggest tiger attained eminence that could not be matched by the recipient of a nobel prize... when my father-in-law madhavrao was studying, masterji set up a new school in the shooting preserve of sussera, so that from the windows of his classroom, madhavrao could select the black buck which he would shoot for dinner."

how much more despicable can man get??? ... but then this was long back... when hunting was considered a sport... now we are more educated (or are we?) ... we know how endangering it is to kill these animals... then why dont we understand???... it seems the more the world is progressing the more indifferent it is becoming...

noted german philosopher kant once said, "the enjoyment of power inevitably corrupts the judgment of reason, and perverts its liberty." ... how very apt....

pride ... part three of the seven deadly sins.....

King Amargupt and Queen Sunanda had a very beautiful daughter called Sanskriti. She was not only beautiful but also very intelligent and passionate. Her beauty was known far and wide She was as beautiful as the morning mist in the valleys of Chambal. She had lovely long hair with a little curls at the end. She was blessed with the prettiest doe like eyes, which were the color of hazel nut - soft brown with a tinge of gold. Her skin was as soft as morning dew and she had a stunning smile.

Every morning the first thing that she would do was go to the mirror and admire herself. The mirror was her best friend. It would always show her the most beautiful face she had ever seen. No one was as stunning as her. No one was as alluring as her. And as the days flew by her pride rose. The only thing on her mind was her beauty. Every prince who saw her wanted to marry her. Wherever she went she dazzled everyone.

One day Prince Rishi came to visit their palace. He wasn’t really handsome but was well known for his intelligence. The moment he set his eyes on Sanskriti he fell in love with her. He asked King Amargupt for her hand in marriage and the King happily agreed. Sanskriti wasn’t really happy with this match but she didn’t have a say in the matter.

After marriage Prince Rishi took good care of her but she never bothered about him. Never gave him a second glance. She would only keep on looking at the mirror all day, admiring herself. Slowly as years passed by she too fell in love with him. But she was too proud to accept that. How could she love him? She was too beautiful for him.

Then one day there was news of war. The Prince went away without even informing her. He was too tired of her vanity. He had given up on her. This hit her pride. She realized that she loved him. For months she kept waiting for him. She forgot her pride. Forgot her mirror.

‘Where’s my Prince? God get him back to me! That’s all I want now.’ These were the thoughts that went through her mind all day.

Then there was news that the Prince had died fighting. She was shocked. She didn’t know what to do? Should she cry? Was there any use? What was all the pride for?

The day they cremated him she gave up everything that she had lived for. Not her life but everything else. She renounced everything. Cut off her long tresses. Wore white and gave up all the pleasures of life. There was nothing in this life for her. The only way she could give up her pride was to take Sanyas! She offered herself to God. There was nothing left in this world for her. Nothing but GOD.

Medieval theologian Thomas Aquinas said of Pride "inordinate self-love is the cause of every sin (1,77) ... the root of pride is found to consist in man not being, in some way, subject to God and His rule."

envy...part one of the seven deadly sins.....

envy.... this word reminds me of that onida advertisement that used to be telecast when i was young...neighbours envy owners pride...

now the first question that comes to my mind is....why envy our neighbours???...or rather why envy anyone????

last week i was discussing this with a friend... and i thought why not ask all of you???... who do you envy ????

the first person that would come to our minds will be someone who we feel is better than us....but if you give this a thought you'll realise that the person concerned is also not perfect... if you ask him he'll give you a name of another person who he envies....

now the next question i put forth is why envy such a person... why envy anyone who isnt the best???....thats why i say if you want to envy someone.... be envious of GOD....

thats because He is the best.... nothing compares to Him... He is perfect... compare yourself to Him not mere mortals who we think are superior to us... i really wouldnt want to compare myself with someone who is imperfect... someone who isnt the best....

now one more question for you...do you know whats the opposite of envy???... ever heard of an english reference to it??... well i got this information from a friend... its called MUDITA...

MUDITA is a pali word which means 'happiness at anothers success in life'...theres no english word for this... but its meaning is so beautiful... its got a little to do with pride... but then its not actually pride.... its more like being happy at another persons success... as such its an antidote to envy...

"Envy is a propensity to view the well-being of others with distress, even though it does not detract from one's own. [It is] a reluctance to see our own well-being overshadowed by another's because the standard we use to see how well off we are is not the intrinsic worth of our own well-being but how it compares with that of others. [Envy] aims, at least in terms of one's wishes, at destroying others' good fortune." (Kant, The Metaphysics of Morals 6:459)
