sloth...part five of the seven deadly sins....

this is one topic which i really didnt want to write about... i mean how many of you guys really really know anyone who is lazy???... atleast i dont... not in this fast paced world where the standard response is 'who has the time???'... those who are poor are trying to make ends meet... those who are rich are trying to get richer... no time for friends and no time for family... so i thought i would deviate a little off course...

take a family for example... parents are working all day... children goto school or college... attend n number of classes and tutions... no time to play coz they have to attend an extracurricular class every evening... husband has no time for wife... and vice versa... they are so tired by the end of the day that i doubt they even have time to catch up on each other... no time for vacations... no time for their parents... ask them to take a vacation and probably it will be a business cum pleasure trip...now wheres the time for 'laziness'???

lives are so stressed today that people have to take help to destress themselves... have to take psychiatric help... divorce rates going up every day.... think of the way we communicate with our friends... sms, webcam, telephone and at the most half an hour at a cafe or a pub.... is that enough???...

therefore according to me the antithesis of sloth is one of the seven deadly sins of today...

the key to get over this is to take it easy... chill... i quote one of my favourite poems by william henry blake... its called

"leisure"

what is this life if, full of care,
we have no time to stand and stare.

no time to stand beneath the boughs
and stare as long as sheep or cows.

no time to see, when woods we pass,
where squirrels hide their nuts in grass.

no time to see, in broad daylight,
streams full of stars, like skies at night.

no time to turn at Beauty's glance,
and watch her feet, how they can dance.

no time to wait till her mouth can
enrich that smile her eyes began.

a poor life this if, full of care,
we have no time to stand and stare.

isnt this true???...we have no time to stand and stare!!!!!.....

Hi Eyes:

A famos (or not-so-famos) Sanskrit shloka says--

udyamen hi sidhyanti kaaryaaNi na manorathai |
na hi suptasya siMhasya pravishanti mukhe mRRigaaH ||

Efforts and not desires make your wishes happen; just like deers don't enter inside the mouth of a sleeping lion.

However, it all depends how are you getting "slothed up". For example,

praaNaapaanau nischay buddhya hRRidi ruddhvaa |
chhitvaa sarvaM sanshay_bandhaM vishayaughaan.h ||
pashyantiisham yaM yatayastaM
vande raamaM ratnakiriiTaM ravibhaasaM ||

Oh Raam, I consistently bow to You, Who visualizes inside the heart of Yogis who, with determination, stop the air inside their lungs (i.e. stop breathing) and destruct all the material tensions around them seeking YOu. I bow to You, who is the best like diamond among jewels and is abode of infinite splendor and shine. [Brahma on Shri Raam in Adhyatma Ramayan, Aranyakaand]

"Tandra" as you might be knowing is used for yoganidraa and laziness both. However, laziness used properly (i.e. in form of yoganidraa) leads you to to "saakshaatkaar" of parameshwar.

Best

PS: Sorry for blabbering a lot, but this point was important. Sloth isn't as much of sin as it seems.

This is same post as I deleted --- however bold and italics are used for easy reading.

Hi
Thanks for dropping into my blog..
i agree with the fact more and more people are stressed bcos of work and life at home..
but the fact is that the world grows and moves faster day by day..every body has to keep up or atleast try...
and you cant say its a mad rush( @anubhav) for money as most people are working hard not only for themselves but for the people who are depend on them like family kids etc...

About the laziness thing, I kind of agree. We've become so busy that we dont really have the time to be lazy

I never really understood why they were called the seven 'deadly' sins. Sloth never killed anyone...unless of course you were a doctor!

I'M lazy! so excuse me while i stand and stare at nothing! ;o)

You are absolutely right Eyezz! People have no time for anything these days than make money, money and money...due to technology I guess the quality of life has gone up but at the same time it has gone down on another level...the family times...

However I like standing and staring...I used to be realy fast-paced and no-time kind of gal...now I have learnt to take it slow and spend more time just doing nothing but watching trees, animals, people, nature around me...listening to birds, talking with friends more often and just having quality time even if it's just sitting at home with family on a quiet night...I dont like too much noise anyways and I dont like night clubs etc...for me, an evening of fun and pleasure would be to catch up with family over dinner on what happened in their day...

I will not say WE HAVE NO TIME...but will re-quote it as, I HAVE TIME, but Im lazy, so I don't have time

It also depends on what I have to STAND AND STARE. If its un-interesting, I dont have time anyway.

Sloth happens to be my favorite sin. Love sleeping all day, curled up in a comma like a cat on the hammock, soaking up the sunrays, not moving any part of your body except maybe blinking your eyes, fritteing away the whole day inconsequentially and now Im too lazy to even finish a senten...

Keshi said...

Going thru this blog(once again) and all the responses/comments I am really surprised. Why are 'starers' and 'standers' like me in such minority?
Sometimes I am really amused when looking at the expressions of people passing me by while I am standing by my car, driver sitting with engine on and me just standing there enjoying getting wet in the rains...
I remember the day( not very long ago) when I used to drive myself and got late for an appo. just beacuse I could not resist stopping midway to look(and keep looking) at a tree that had just started getting its fresh leaves-kislaya- i think is how they are known in Hindi.
It's difficult for me to understand how can anyone not stop in his/her tract on seeing a lil squirrel, how can one resist the urge to hold it up in his/her hands pat it and reassure ' despite all this cynicism all around life continues to be beautiful-wonderful'
how can anyone takes his/her eyes off from that sight from the aeroplane when one sees the shadow of one's own plane on some piece of cloud floating down below?
May the minority of 'standers' and 'starers' be not such a minority.

awww aeolus...this is a wonderful one...was waiting for something like this.. coz i m one of the 'standers' n 'starers'...u know whn i was in college...we used to hike up to matheran... its a hillstation near mumbai... n wat generally was a 2 hr hike took me atleast 4 hrs...coz i would stop at so many places n just look around... n i can still remember the bored faces of my friends...lol
